Apple Inc. informed the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) that it has not approved the Google Voice, an application for iPhone, because it alters functionality of the gizmo – yet Apple denied the news that it has rejected Google’s application outright.
Apple states that Google Voice tries to override the iPhone mobile telephone feature by creating a separate system for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail.
Catherine Novelli, Apple vice president for worldwide government affairs, mentions in a letter to the FCC,
Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application, and continues to study it.![]()
The application is supposedly a serious competitive threat to the voice services that come with the iPhone. The Apple’s agreement with AT&T disallows it from permitting any application which makes a VoIP session without prior permission from AT&T. Although some applications like eBay owned Skype have been approved but only to the extent that they may be used over Wi-Fi and not on AT&T’s network.
